Illustration Friday - "Cake"

* Click for larger *

Here's the latest for Illustration Friday. The prompt was "Cake."

One of the most beautiful things I've seen is a mother baking with her son.

I didn't have a lot of time for this one, but I wanted to convey that feeling. The warm light coming in, the closeness of mother and child, and just the happiness of the moment that would become a memory they both cherish.

Oh, and, yes, I realize that poor diaper-clad boy is dangerously high up. That was for the sake of composition. And, hey, momma's got a hold of him. Never safer than that. ;o)

Thanks for stoppin' by. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

really nice image - despite the flagrant disregard for Health and Safety protocol (if he goes off-balance, she'll have to grab him by the neck)

Thanks, everyone! I appreciate the feedback and I'm glad you like it. I've played around with this style for years, but really gave it a shot with the Lord of the Rings sketch cards I did. Now, it's one of my favorite styles to work in. You'll surely see more like this.

THANKS!!

Ray,

I dig the drawing. Is it a combo of a pencil drawing or did you do it all digitally? If so what software do you use? Forgive me for not poking around on your site to find out your process.....

Thanks! Yeah, this is all digital, which is how I work most of the time. I use Photoshop 7. There's a larger dry media brush in there that i size down to 6 pixels or so to use as a "pencil," because it kidna has that effect. Then colors were done with the same brush at a larger setting.

Thanks for checking it out, man. Glad you like it!

You really accomplished what you set out to convey. You did a wonderful job with the light, great attention to the total composition of the picture and you did a great job with the facial expressions.

This really has such a warm and loving feeling! It has the feeling of a wonderful moment remembered...colored in the warmth of sun and happiness. Beautiful work:>

i wonder how you got such a crisp thumbnail! i'm envious :)

Thank you for the kind words!!

And, Erika, I use the Sharpen Filter in Photoshop for the thumbnails. Sometimes it looks good, sometimes it makes it weird. Just depends on the art. Give it a try.

Thanks fer looin'!
